Emerging Demand: The women’s Adidas Handball Spezial.
A major secondary market development occurred this week, with the Campus 00s in core black (HQ8708) climbing from being the 3rd current best selling shoe on StockX to being the #1 best selling shoe on the platform in terms of recent sales volumes. With hundreds of sales occurring daily for the SKU, it was able to overtake other evergreen pairs in popularity, including most notably both the men’s and women’s Ugg Tasman in Chestnut, as well as the Jordan 11 Retro DMP Gratitude. However, this was not the only secondary market development for Adidas this week, and far from the most intriguing.
With a relatively tame post-holidays market, the Adidas Handball Spezial definitely stands out in terms of overall secondary-market sales volumes. Shown below is a sales data visualization for IE5894, the bright red / clear pink, and currently most popular colorway. This SKU, launched in late November 2023, went from being outside of the top 1000 fastest selling sneakers on StockX at the beginning of the week to being the 74th best selling sneaker overall on the platform as of 11 PM EST on 1/8/24, overtaking other very popular adidas models such as the Gazelle indoor in bliss pink (90th best selling sneaker overall as of the same time). One additional factor increasing the intrigue surrounding this SKU is that it was generally available via Adidas’ DTC channels and partner platforms throughout the holiday demand spike, and has since nearly disappeared from all primary market vendors, indicating this may be the first newly trending sneaker of 2024.
As shown in the visualization below, not only have sales volumes increased, but so too have average sales prices signifying significant demand. In tandem acceleration in prices and demand frequently occur as an indicator for the beginning of a trend.
The same demand pattern can be observed across other pairs in the Handball Spezial lineup including IF6561, the clear pink / arctic night colorway. This SKU increased from being the 954th to 124th current best selling SKU on StockX throughout the previous week, with a massive spike in demand occurring on 1/8. Similarly to IE5894, the bright red / clear pink colorway, this SKU is not new, having launched in early July 2023, and has since seen consistently fairly low secondary market trading volume. The combined price and volume action shown below signify a break from the “status quo” for this SKU and mark a considerable increase in market interest/demand.
As is often the case in many industries, but especially in the fashion industry, “a rising tide” of a few popular colorways of a product nearly always “lifts all boats”, referring to other tangential products and colorways of the trending product also seeing heightened demand. That can be seen playing out here, where other very similar low top Adidas silhouettes have followed suit, albeit to a lesser degree. The aforementioned Gazelle indoor in bliss pink (IE7002) increased from being the 197th to 90th best selling SKU on StockX across the same time frame.
Based on this data, we predict that simplistic, low top adidas sneakers will see a major resurgence in popularity last observed at scale in late 2022 thru early 2023 with their Samba OG model, with the Handball Spezial leading the way in at very least the womenswear sector.
